Google returns thousands of results for photographers in New York so choosing the right photographer for your needs may be tough.  With the low cost of Nikon, Canon and other digital SLRs many photographers are popping up all over the place.  Just have a quick look on Craig’s List and you'll find many photographers willing to work for a cost between free and thousands of dollars.  How do you know whom to choose?

There are certainly pros and cons of choosing both the thousand dollar photographers and the free guy.  Generally nothing is free but often photographers with an abundance of talent are looking to get their start in the industry and are willing to take on your headshots or event photography for free.  The cons are a photographer such as this probably doesn't have a large portfolio and the quality of the work you will get is more likely than not, somewhat unknown.  However, if your budget is tight this may be the way to go.  Sometimes the new guy on the block may charge $100-$200 just so there’s a business transaction taking place.  For a wedding, that's equal to free.  For headshots a guy may charge $50 just to make sure you show up.

The big studios who can charge $5,000 - $10,000 and up for a wedding, well, if you can afford it, this is generally the way to go.  Not to say that everyone that demands a high ransom for his or her work is good at it; however, for the most part, someone asking for that kind of money has done this before.  The photographer will have many different albums, slideshows and images of their work to show you, which will give you an idea as to whether or not you like or will like their work.

So to keep it short for today sometimes you have to pay a lot to get a lot, but sometimes it is the low cost guy that you need.
